  • Barcode Scanner to read Barcodes on Screens

Barcode Scanner to read Barcodes on Screens

I often get asked for an inexpensive barcode scanner that will read barcodes on screens. There are applications where a barcode, either 1D or 2D, needs to be scanned on a smartphone screen.

There are many of the CCD type scanners that are capable of this. A few days ago I tested a few and found the perfect barcode scanner to do this.

The Entry Level Datalogic Quickscan QW2420 Lite reads 1D and 2D codes off a smart phone easily. We tested it with normal 1D Linear barcodes and 2D QR Codes. We tried different size barcodes and the scanner performed very well.

The QW2420 emits white illumination together with a blue dot for aiming at the barcode. When the scanner reads and decodes the barcode it throws the green dot onto the screen together with a green LED on the scanner and an audible beep.

Datalogic’s patented ‘Green Spot’ technology provides good-read feedback in noisy environments. The internal beeper can be silenced for quiet environments. This makes it ideal in an office environment.

If you need a cordless Bluetooth scanner to read barcodes on screens then I can suggest the Datalogic QBT2430 Bluetooth Scanner.

The QBT2430 scanner reads 1D, 2D and QR barcodes on screens of Smart Devices quite easily. The QBT2430 offers a 25 meter range between itself and the base station.

This scanner also has a blue aiming system and the green dot after a good scan. The green dot is visible in the picture above.

Featuring Bluetooth® Wireless Technology, the QuickScan QBT2400 2D imager can transmit data to the host through its base station as well as to any commercial or embedded Bluetooth compliant device.

The QBT2400 2D imager can also be connected to any tablet using either iOS or Android operating systems via the Bluetooth HID profile.

An innovative, long lasting and user replaceable Li-Ion battery package allows the simultaneous replacement of battery and scanner contacts to allow a refresh of the most significant parts related to mobile products functionality.

A microUSB port on the scanner foot allows an auxiliary method for battery recharging and also allows the product to be used without the cradle.

Conclusion for scanners that read barcodes of screens

I have personally tested both these models and can safely say that they read barcodes of computer, tablet and smart phone screens quite easily.

  • Stress during Covid 19 Pandemic

    Stress during Covid 19 Pandemic

The corona virus hit our shores here in South Africa in March 2020. At the time of writing this article it has been with us for 16 months. The stress levels during covid 19 are starting to show in many peoples lives.

What does Covid 19 stand for

‘CO’ stands for CORONA, ‘VI’ for Virus and ‘D’ for disease. CoronaVirus Disease of 2019 hence the name COVID 19. The virus originated in Wuhan City, China.

    The Third Wave

We here in South Africa are experiencing our third wave which seems to have reached its peak. For me it has been the most devastating wave so far. We have lost friends and Acquaintances and know of many people amongst our family and friends that have thankfully recovered.

    Stress during covid 19 pandemic

Much of the nation may not have caught the actual virus but the Covid 19 virus has affected many peoples lives. So we can say that many, although not ill, suffer from the virus. This in my mind presents itself as stress.

I think we all feel the added stress caused by this pandemic. We are bombarded daily via social media and the news on deaths and other disturbing facts caused by the covid 19 virus.

    What is stress

Stress is your body’s way of responding to any kind of demand or threat. When you sense danger, whether it’s real or imagined, the body’s defenses kick into high gear in a rapid, automatic process known as the “fight or flight” reaction or the “stress response.”

During a normal Stressful situation the bodies nervous system releases stress hormones including adrenalin and cortisol. These hormones help the body react to any threat by increasing strength, sharpening your senses, raising your blood pressure and tightening your muscles.

This is all great when it does not last long and the body can return to its normal state.

    Long term or chronic stress

When these stressors that cause the stress hormones to be released are always present it can have adverse effects on the body. Long term exposure to cortisol and adrenalin puts you at risk to health and mental problems like:

    • Depression
    • headaches
    • heart disease and high blood pressure
    • Sleeping problems
    • memory and concentration problems
    • muscle tension
    • aggressiveness

There are more I’m sure but these are the symptoms I see in people around me. I too suffer from this long term Stress during Covid 19 pandemic.

Personally I battle with falling asleep with my thoughts constantly running around in circles with everything that is going on around me. I worry about the health and wellbeing of my family and friends.

After the untimely passing of one of my wife’s and my dearest friends things became very real. She tested positive for covid 19 and a few days later she was gone.

    Further causes of stress

There has been many people in South Africa that have lost their jobs. This being due to the Covid 19 lockdowns which has caused many companies to close or to retrench staff.

Families have no income and they have to rely on the generosity of others to see them through these hardships. Can you imagine the stress these people are going through.

Then we had the looting that happened in Natal and certain parts of Gauteng. Businesses were looted, destroyed and some even burnt down. The job losses are huge! This was totally a shocker to a country already battling a failing economy.

How to survive the Stress during Covid 19

I have read various articles on how to combat the stress. They all talk about eating right, exercise, meditation and so on. These are important but, personally, I think we should look at the way we interact with others.

Be there for each other and show compassion and kindness. There is way too much bitchiness and aggression towards each other. We after all in this together, fighting to stay sane and alive.

By being kind to each other and pulling together you will lower your stress level and the people around you stress level. Spread some love and make each other happy. You will be amazed at how this makes you and those around you feel better.

Just remember the social distancing and sanitizing.

  • About the Venus Flytrap

    About the Venus Flytrap

I have for years been growing two Venus Flytrap plants and it has been most satisfying. Many people believe that they are difficult to keep alive but its actually quite easy.

The Venus Flytrap’s scientific name is Dionaea muscipula and its native to the subtropical wetlands on the East Coast of the United States in North Carolina and South Carolina.

    Venus Flytrap

They can however be successfully grown in Gauteng, South Africa. The summer months are more than hot enough and the winter lets the plant go dormant.

The biggest expense apart from buying the plant is the water. You need to water the plant with Distilled water or Reverse Osmosis water. But the joy of seeing the plant thrive is well worth it.

How the plant catches its prey

The leaves or traps of the Venus Flytrap are so “designed” that they snap shut when an insect enters the trap. There are tiny hairs inside the trap and when an insect touches one and within a few seconds another, it triggers the trap and it shuts.

    Venus Flytrap

Once the trap has shut the insect or prey will still move around inside the trap stimulating more of the trigger hairs. This will cause the trap to seal around the prey and digestion starts taking place.

If the trap has shut and there is no movement the trap will open again after a few hours. This makes feeding the plant difficult unless live insects are used.

    Feeding the Venus Flytrap

As the summer rolls around and the days get warmer and longer, the flytrap come out of its dormancy. You will see new leaves grow which will eventually turn into traps.

Once these traps have opened the plant is ready to feed. There might not be many creepy crawlies around yet and that’s when I feed the plants. I feed the plant with Blood Worms that can be purchased at a pet supply store. Gently put a couple of worms into a trap and move them around to trigger the trap. As these blood worms don’t move you have to gently “massage” the the closed trap to simulate movement inside it. This will cause the trap to seal around the worms and digestion will take place.

I generally feed about three traps every two weeks until the insects arrive and they are drawn to the sweet nectar in the traps.

The Soil needed for potting the Flytrap

The venus flytrap requires nutrient-free soil that provides good drainage and aeration. Use a standard soil mixture of 1 part peat moss and 1 part perlite. Never use potting soil, compost or fertilizer. These ingredients will kill your plant. The soil mix can be purchased at Hecker Nursery or from Jozi Carnivores.

    Watering the Venus Flytrap

This is where most people fail to keep the plant alive. You must only water the plant with water free of minerals or nutrients as it gets these from digesting the insects.

Use only Distilled Water, Rain Water or water that has been through the Reverse Osmosis process. The soil needs to be constantly moist to simulate the natural boggy places the plants originate from. Never let the soil dry out.

I keep my potted flytraps in a pot holder filled with water to keep the soil wet.

    Growing Conditions

The plant needs about 6 hours of direct sunlight per day in the summer months. It can tolerate quite high temperatures but just keep the soil moist.

When the winter approaches, the leaves with start to wither and die. This is completely normal. Through the winter months you can keep the plant indoors away from direct sunlight but still the keep the soil moist.

As spring rolls around you will see new growth. You can now gently cut away the black dead traps to make place for the new leaves and traps.

Venus Flytrap Yes it does flower

The flytrap does flower but it takes quite a lot of energy from the plant. So while the plant is young and rather small rather cut the stem off when it starts producing flowers

    Venus Flytrap Flower

    In conclusion

The venus flytrap is not difficult to grow and keep alive. Its exciting in many ways having a plant that seems almost more alive. Give me a shout in the comments with your ideas or questions.

  • Sundew Carnivorous Plant

    Sundew Carnivorous Plant

Another great Carnivorous Plant to grow is the Sundew or Drosera. The Sundew is also relatively easy to grow and keep alive here in South Africa.

According to what I have read, the sundew is native to most continents where the temperature is warm to hot with a lot of moisture and rain. They are, just like the Venus Flytrap, found in boggy areas where the soil is poor and constantly moist.

How the Sundew traps its prey

The leaves leaves have hairs protruding from them and most of these hairs have a sweet sticky secretions that trap small insects.

    Sundew Leaf

When a small insect gets trapped in the sticky substance, the leaf or trap curls around to bring as much of the trap in contact with the insect for digestion.

    Feeding the Sundew Carnivorous Plant

The Sundew is very efficient in trapping its own prey but when spring comes around, the plant starts growing new leaves or traps and there might not be many insects around yet.

I fed the plant with Blood Worms that are found in most pet shops here in SA. Gently put a small worm on 1 or two leaves and gently move it around to simulate an insect. The leaf might start curling around the Blood Worm but in most cases it doesn’t. The leave will digest the worm and get the nutrients it needs.

Do this about once every two weeks until you see the plant is trapping its own prey.

The soil needed for the Sundew

The Sundew requires nutrient-free soil that provides good drainage and aeration. Use a standard soil mixture of 1 part peat moss and 1 part perlite. Never use potting soil, compost or fertilizer. These ingredients will kill your plant. The soil mix can be purchased at Hecker Nursery or from Jozi Carnivores.

    Watering the Sundew

Just like most of the Carnivorous Plants, the Sundew needs water free of nutrients and minerals. The soil has to be kept moist all the time even in the Winter months when the plant goes dormant.

Always water the plant with Distilled WaterRain Water or Reverse Osmosis Water. Giving the plant normal tap water will kill the plant eventually.

I kept the pots in pot holders filled with water to ensure the soil stayed wet.

    Growing Conditions

The Sundew needs between 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. If you keep the plant indoors put it in a window sill that gets sunlight. The Sundew, like most of the Carnivorous Plants goes dormant in the winter and the leaves will wither and turn black. Keep the soil wet during the dormant period and you will see that when the days start warming again in spring.

    Sundew Carnivorous Plant

    In Conclusion

The Sundew or Drosera is a lovely and interesting plant to add to your collection of unusual plants. Quite easy to grow and keep alive when you use the correct soil for potting and the correct mineral and nutrient free water as described earlier.

  • Natural Treatment for Gout You Can Try At Home

Natural Treatment for Gout You Can Try At Home

This is my personal Natural Treatment for Gout that I have been experimenting with for a number of years. I had been suffering the excruciating pain since around my mid 30’s.

This is by no means a medical remedy but it has worked for me. I have not had another attack of gout for approximately two years now.

    gout in the ankle

I suffered gout in both ankles and big toes on both feet. At times my ankles were swollen and red and I could not put any weight on my feet.

These attacks would sometimes last about 2 weeks if left untreated and I just knew that once it started, it would spread to my other ankle and toes.

I was put on Puricos pills but after a few weeks I really suffered from side effects like drowsiness, headaches and kidney pain. So I rather decided to look for a natural remedy.

    Moringa

An old friend from the Air Force days suggested I try taking the natural Moringa Capsules. I started taking three capsules a day and could start feeling the effects after approximately 3 weeks.

There was a definite improvement in my joints and I felt quite a lot healthier than before. My blood pressure, which I do take medication for, became much lower and stable.

Moringa capsule for natural treatment of gout
    Moringa Capsules

    Natural Treatment for Gout

The gout unfortunately did not disappear completely after using Moringa. I would still get the occasional attacks but not so severe as before.

I started taking Cod Liver Oil capsules after a recommendation and this took the pain away in my shoulders which had been bothering me for years. So this was an added bonus.

At night after supper I would drink a glass of water with Bicarbonate of Soda to lower the Uric acid in my body. But this didn’t seem to have any effect on the gout.

    Cancerbush Herbal Tea Sutherlandia frutescens

My wife popped into our local pharmacy some time ago and was talking to the pharmacist about gout and joint pains. He suggested we try drinking Cancerbush Tea.

To cut a long story short – its been approximately two years, drinking the Moringa Capsules and the Cancerbush tea, that I have never had another gout attack.

I don’t consume much alcohol but do not eat very healthy. Too much red meat etc etc but never a pain in my joints again.

    Cancerbush herbal tea for gout

This combination of Moringa and Cancerbush has really helped me with my quality of life and I can not stop recommending these two natural products.

Whether it will work for everyone, I dont know but I do know that you should give it a go and see what it does.

Please comment below if you have received any pain relief from the above suggestions or what has helped you in the gout struggle.

  • NG Kerk in Reaper Street Farrarmere

NG Kerk in Reaper Street Farrarmere

I was a member of the Afrikaans Dutch Reformed Church (NG Kerk) virtually my whole life which started in 1963. Even though I didn’t attend many of the services over the last few years, the church had been an anchor in my life.

My family had so much history that revolved around the Church. My Mom and Dad were married in the Church on 6 May 1961.

I came along in June of 1963 and was Christened in the Church, attended Sunday School, which was quite a battle as I grew up English and went to English schools. This resulted in me being rather a quite chap during Sunday School Classes.

I was confirmed into the church around 1980, I need to check the exact date and will update. After being confirmed my Dad and I decided to become more involved with the Church. My Dad became a Ouderling (Elder) and I a Diaken (Deacon). We did this for a number of years.

It was in 1982 that I first saw the girl walking into Church one Sunday morning and I just knew that I had to get to know her. My Folks had seen me eyeing this girl and when we got home I realized that they knew who she was.

After much begging and pleading I eventually convinced my Mom to tell me who she is. It turned out that my Parents and her Parents were actually friends. After a look into the phone book at the time and a couple of phone calls, I eventually got to talk to Tersia Maritz! Exciting times.

So yep, the Church played an important part in what my life is today. We didn’t get married in the Farrarmere NG Kerk but in a Church in Pretoria as I was in the Air Force at the time and a member of the Pretoria “Gemeente”.

Both our Sons were baptized in the Farrarmere NG Kerk. So you can gather that the Farrarmere NG Kerk was a huge part of my life and every time I passed the Church, while riding down Wordsworth Street I got fond memories of what was.

It was with great dismay that I learnt that the Church Building was to be torn down and a bigger and I suppose “modern” one was to be built in its place.

The day I took these photos of the broken rock that used to be so important in my life, tears ran down my cheeks. Makes one realize that nothing should be taken for granted and nothing lasts forever. We must cherish what we have now, in a second it could be gone.

In short – the NG Kerk Farrarmere was the building block of where I am today with a Wife of 36 years, two awesome sons, an amazing Daughter In Law and two of the best Grand Children ever! Not forgetting a Loving Mother too! If it was not for her, I wouldn’t be here. Miss my Old Man more that I can express – Archibald Joseph Norval 15 April 1936 to 4 May 2015 R.I.P
